Up for sale is simply one of finest guitars to ever leave Gibson Acoustic's headquarters and factory in Bozeman, Montana - a beautiful, custom-ordered 2002 Gibson J-185 EC with remarkable Quilted Maple top, back, sides and neck. The combination makes for not only one of the most beautiful Gibson guitars you've EVER seen, but also one of the best sounding.

The J-185's slightly smaller Jumbo body style has historically given it a more balanced and warmer overall tone over its booming big brother, the Gibson J-200. But add this guitar's custom-ordered, one-off bookmatched Quilted Maple top, back, sides and neck, and the tones that emanate from this incredible acoustic are nothing short of heavenly. You really have to see and hear this incredibly rare Gibson acoustic to truly appreciate both its beauty, and the sound that comes from it.

This amazing Gibson also features multi-binding on both the top and back; a beautifully bound traditional black Gibson peghead with Mother of Pearl Gibson logo and crown inlays and original gold Grover tuners; a stunning three-piece Quilted Maple neck topped with a bound Ebony fretboard adorned with the J-185's traditional double parallelegram Mother of Pearl fingerboard inlays; a magnificent multi-bound custom-made rosette with striking Abalone pearl ring in the middle; a custom-ordered solid Ebony mustache bridge with bone saddle and white bridge pins; and the J-185's standard two-point tortoiseshell pickguard.

The appointments on this exclusive and quite rare Gibson J-185 make it one of the most impressive acoustics of its kind. The brilliant handcrafted workmanship of Gibson Acoustic's superb master luthiers are evident all over this extraordinary guitar - who's construction was undoubtedly overseen by none other than Gibson Acoustic's legendary luthier Ren Ferguson.

We looked long and hard to find another one like it, and we simply couldn't find one. Indeed, it's hard to imagine this is the only solid Maple J-185 to ever leave Bozeman, Montana, but we assure you that the few that probably do exist are already in the hands of collectors who will hold on to them and pass them down to their heirs - therefore, making this a rare opportunity to purchase a truly rare Gibson acoustic!

The original pickup system that came with this J-185 from factory was Fishman's PREFIX PLUS, which is a now discontinued, instrument-mounted pickup/preamp system. The original electronics were replaced by the guitar's original owner about one year ago to L.R. Baggs' very popular Element Active System, which delivers
performance previously unattainable from an undersaddle pickup. The streamlined
and efficient design removes every unnecessary internal component to improve
the coupling between the transducer and the guitar. This substantially improves
the sensitivity of the transducer for a robust, lively and open sound with
great dynamics and a delicate high end.

The
Element Active System also pairs the Element undersaddle transducer with a
pre-contoured all-discrete Class-A endpin preamp and includes a small,
removable soundhole-mounted volume control for added convenience and
versatility. The entire system was very easy to install and features
plug-and-play performance.

The original Fishman PREFIX PLUS undersaddle pickup/preamp system is also included with the sale of this acoustic, and could be very easily reinstalled if so desired.

Overall, this incredible acoustic is in NEAR MINT to MINT condition. There really is nothing to report that affects the overall beauty of this amazing and very rare instrument.

This very collectible Gibson J-185 also comes with its original Gibson Acoustic hardshell case with plush blue interior.

Super clean and all original 2011 Gibson Keb Mo limited edition acoustic guitar. Antique Natural finish. Plays and sounds fantastic. Purchased from the original owner who only had it for a month or so and barely used it. Comes with paperwork and original case.  This guitar is clean and in virtually mint condition.  No signs of wear.  Plays and sounds amazing.

A legendary body shape that echoes the look and sound of the early 1900s.

The Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster Acoustic Guitar has a classic Gibson L-00 body and custom herringbone top trim, recalling the instruments played by some of the first blues artists in the Deep South of the United States. The custom neck shape and wider nut width give the Bluesmaster guitar easy playability. Tonal enhancements are created by a customized thinner top made of Adirondack red spruce for singing tone and sustain.

The Keb' Mo' acoustic guitar's carved French heel neck shape means easy finger reaching up the neck for those high notes and vibrato.

The 12th fret is joined to the guitar body for a warmer resonant tone and added playing comfort.

Gibson gives the Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster guitar a special darker vintage antiquing of its authentic nitro-lacquer finish. Other embellishments include a 
Keb' Mo' Signature truss cover and L.R. Baggs Element pickup with soundhole volume control. 

Each of the 300 Limited Edition guitars will bear an inside label signed by Keb' Mo' himself

Body Wood
The top of the Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster is made from 2 pieces of solid Adirondack red spruce, a rare and highly prized tonewood that featured in the tops of many instruments from the golden age of the flattop acoustic guitar. The instrument's back and sides are made from solid mahogany.

Design
The Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster is made in the image of Gibson's small-bodied L-series guitars, such as the L-00. Its solid spruce top is sanded to a custom thickness and is supported by an X-brace pattern formed of scalloped spruce braces, all of which optimize its resonance and tonal richness. In the tradition of many small-bodied finger-style guitars, the Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster carries no pickguard, a feature which also further enhances the top's resonance.

Tonal Characteristics
Despite its small body dimensions, the Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster has a deep, rich, multidimensional tone, and a volume that belies its size. Its thin, lightly braced top aids its superb projection, while its solid mahogany back and sides add excellent definition and a velvety high-end shimmer to its tone.

Finish
The Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster is available in either antique natural or vintage sunburst.

Process
The Keb' Mo' Signature Bluesmaster is hand-finished in a process that demands several coats and many hours. Unlike many other manufacturers who settle for a polyurethane finish, Gibson opts for a nitrocellulose finish that will encourage the natural vibration of the instrument for a purer tone. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous and actually gets thinner over time. That way your guitar's wood can breathe and age beautifully.

Neck Wood
The neck is made from quartersawn solid mahogany. The quartersawn grain orientation produces superior strength and resonance, and is preferred in the necks of high-end acoustic guitars.

Truss Rod
Gibson's traditional truss rod, found in most all of their guitars, is highly responsive to the individual adjustments you'll want to make to personalize and optimize string action and sustain.

Profile
The guitar's neck is carved to a custom Keb' Mo'-designed sculpted V profile.

Headstock Shape and Angle
The headstock is carved in the style of Gibson's Advanced Jumbo with tapered edge, and is pitched at the vintage-correct 17-degree back angle.

Logo
The Gibson logo is inlaid in mother of pearl across the top of the Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster's headstock, which also carries the traditional mother-of-pearl crown inlay. The truss rod cover is further engraved with Keb' Mo's signature.

Joint
The Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster's glued-in neck is attached with a compound dovetail joint, positioned at the 12th fret. This neck/body joint results in a bridge placement further into the center of the guitar's rounded lower bout, which perfectly hits the top's "sweet spot" for improved resonance and sustain.

Tonal Characteristics
The angled, classical-style peg head and mahogany neck work together to provide exceptional tonal richness and sustain from the neck, while the deeper bridge placement—a result of the 12th fret neck/body joint—increases the guitar's overall sonic depth.

Fingerboard Species
The neck carries a fingerboard of East Indian rosewood. Rosewood is both hard wearing and sonically superlative, adding sweetness and depth to the guitar's overall sound.

Dimensions

The Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster is built to a 25" scale length, and its fingerboard has a 12" radius. Combined with its 1.805" nut width, these dimensions offer plenty of room for popular traditional and contemporary blues styles with a string spacing that finger-style players in particular will appreciate, and no "dead' or "choked" strings during blues bends.

Frets
The fingerboard carries 18 narrow, vintage-style frets in total, with 12 frets clear of the body.

Inlays
The fingerboard is inlaid with vintage-style 1/4" mother-of-pearl dot position markers.

Nut Material
The Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster has a genuine bone nut for optimum resonance and sustain.

Width
The width of the nut is approximately 1.805", the preferred width for flattop blues guitars.

Electronics
The Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster carries a built-in L.R. Baggs Element pickup with a single volume control mounted inconspicuously in the edge of the sound hole and a standard 1/4" end-pin jack. The Element is an advanced unit from one of the world's leading acoustic-guitar pickup manufacturers, and it offers a broad, natural projection of the guitar's natural tone without interfering with the vibration of the top and bridge when it is played unplugged.

Tuning Keys
The headstock carries vintage-style, open-back nickel tuners with an efficient 14:1 ratio for excellent tuning stability.

Bridge
The Keb' Mo' Bluesmaster carries a traditional "belly down" bridge made from solid East Indian rosewood with traditional bridge pins and a solid bone bridge for enhanced sustain and resonance.

This Mk72 features BEAUTIFUL ROSEWOOD BACK AND SIDES, 3 piece ebony/rosewood/ebony fingerboard, really attractive bridge and sound hole ring, and a beautiful spruce top. The MK is one of Gibson's Great Acoustic advances!

 

During the ’70s, one of the big buzzes in the guitar press was the work of Michael Kasha, a physics Ph.D. who was doing a thesis on the physical aspects of acoustics as they relate to the mechanical system design of the acoustic guitar. Kasha developed all these groovy variations on the standard fan bracing, with an asymmetrical bridge that transferred heavier bass waves to the top via a fat round part and thinner treble wave via a tapering skinny part, and other such swell ideas derived from hours of staring at an oscilloscope. Another neat feature, by the way, was a slide out interchangeable saddle.

A marriage of art and science
True to its experimental mentality, Gibson decided to pursue this scientific approach to acoustic guitar design and using its discoveries, introduced the Mark series.  Now a rare collector prize since they were produced only  1975-1979 The first active promotion of the Marks occurred in August of 1975 with full spread ads in Guitar Player.

A NICE, (IF ALLOW FOR DECENT RE-FINISH WORK) VINTAGE J-35.  Please look closely at all pictures which represent an important part of the description!

Looking for a nice sounding, crack free, pre-war classic? THIS ONE IS READY TO TAKE OUT and PLAY.  Guitar includes a nice, newer arch top tweed hard case with leather handle.  The neck set is fine.  Recent set up with new bone saddle.

The action at 12th fret is less than 3 /32" on high e- string and a little less than 1/8" on the low E string

Back Story: This guitar once had two oversized pickguards.  They were removed by previous owner, a luthier, and the top wood was bleached to clean up the traces of where the guards were located and then one thin coat of finish was applied.   The back and sides have been attractively re-finished and buffed out to a nice glossy appearance.  There are a couple smaller flaws in the side finish but overall it is pleasing work.  The fretboard once had additional diamond fret markers that have been neatly removed and replaced with dark wood; the guitar now has the original factory style with pearl dots.

Note the picture showing the neck joint to body.  Note the fretboard picture which should indicate some clean up work and some idea of where the additional markers once were. 

THERE IS SOME TOP WEAR NEAR THE BRIDGE BELOW THE PICKGUARD.

The top received a single coat of shellac after being bleached and cleaned.  The pickguard is a Gibson donor guard taken from a 1940 Kalamazoo ORIOLE model.  While this guitar has had restoration work done, I believe all the internal bracing looks to be original.   Brazilian bridge looks original. Three non-scalloped tone bars.  Has a maple bridge plate. Tapered mahogany neck block.

I have posted many pictures of this crack free instrument.  These pictures represent an important part of the description. The instrument has a nice visual appearance but does not have the original finish.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT a high end pre-war collectible quality guitar.  This is a lower cost option and a player guitar.

 THIS IS A BEAUTY IN FANTASTIC SHAPE. JUST HAD HER A FULL FRET REPLACE AND GROVER TUNERS PUT ON BY A GENTLEMAN THAT WORKS FOR GIBSON ACOUSTIC. ORIGINAL TUNERS AND GIG BAG COME TOO. SHE WILL BE PACKED TO THE HILT. THIS IS TRULY A GREAT JAZZ BOX. KEEP HER AS IS, OR ELECTRIFY. THE ACTION IS LOW AND FAST WITH NOW BUZZ AND GREAT WARM TONE WITH MORE VOLUME THAN YOU'D THINK.

Thanks for clicking in to the sale of my beloved 1959 J200. The guitar has been with me for time and has to be the best sounding Jumbo I have ever heard. Super loud. It honestly sounds like a grand piano. It has the important big baseball bat neck! This is a regretful sale.

The guitar is all there, the correct bridge, tuners, frets and the all important original brown lifton case although it has seen better days it still protects the guitar adequately.

At some stage during its 53 year life the guitar had some overspray to the top although it is unbelievably crack free and the back, sides and neck appear to the original.

The original owner who had it for 40 years did play it a lot. There are signs of playwear around the sound hole and pickguard but this only adds to the mojo of the guitar. As I said the sound is phenomenal.

The guitar has just come back from Dave King after having a set up and he said he has never heard a J200 like this one. Mark Ammon from Relic Guitars here in the UK has also played this guitar and he totally fell in love with it.

If it was mint it should be £10,000 + but this is a rare example of one which you could take out and gig (it wants to be played like all guitars!) and can only increase in value. After all 1959 is the pinnacle year for Gibson guitars so grab yourself a bargain once in a lifetime opportunity and is priced to sell. Good Luck. 

 

 

I bought this guitar new, and it is in very good condition.

The guitar plays and sounds great.. Only has very little  playing time on it.

I notice a small crack  below the bridge on the finish very very hard to see. besides that it is in new condition.No marks at all.

The serial number is 93387051 which it was bought in 1998.

Comes with  a gibson case and all the papers it came with.

It also has the soundhole humidifier and humidity cap.

Here is a truly beautiful all original 1964 Gibson Hummingbird with a gorgeous & vibrant Cherry Sunburst finish.  The guitar is amazing sounding!  It plays very well & sets up with nice action.  It features the Gibson adjustable bridge with the White ceramic insert.  The neck feels great.  It is wide at the nut measuring 43 MM.  That is just One MM below 1 & 11/16’th inches.  The frets have lots of life left!

    The guitar is overall in great shape. There is a typical small crack repair on the top of the sound hole by the neck joint high E side.  There is a micro hairline alongside the pick guard just above the bridge.  There is a tiny professional plug fill for a strap button hole on the back of the heel.  It looks almost invisible!  Otherwise the top looks great!  The back and sides are just fine. There was never a headstock repair or any refinishing.  The Guitar has all the original parts.  This has fine playability and sounds lovely!  This is a true treasure to be had. The Hummingbird ships with an original hard case.  The wonderful guitar ships in ready to play condition.
