Hello, up for sale is an original 1952 Gibson J50 acoustic guitar. It has a Z factory number on the neck block for 1952.
These old small-pickguard J50's are great guitars. They are usually lightweight, play and sound great, and the small pickguard looks way better than the later guard !. This guitar weighs 4.1 lbs and has the big rounded neck profile.
This guitar is in very good + condition and has no overspray or big cracks. It plays well and sounds great and has recently been checked over and set up. The bridge was lowered slightly and reglued so the guitar has good action with a decent saddle height for good sound. It has pick wear on the top and some edge wear to the finish on the side of the neck. The finish has yellowed over the years and has some lacquer checking and small dings and scratches like most old guitars. The guitars binding is in good shape-nothing is lifting or excessively shrunk and separating.
The neck is straight and the frets and fingerboard are in good shape. The guitar has the pickguard crack near the pickguard edge between the soundhole and bridge. This is very common on old acoustics due to the shrinkage of the pickguard. There is a little lacquer check or seem seperation thing right behind the bridge that is about 1 1/2" inches long. I don't think its a crack though-it doesn't move when you push on it and it is level.
The tuners buttons have been replaced since the original ones shrank and crumbled. For a short time there was a different set of tuners on there were longer than the Kluson back plate so it left a very slight impression. There are no extra holes or marks on the face of the peghead and this is very minor. The is a discoloration mark on the back of the peghead probably from oiling the tuners!
OK so you know all the details. The important thing is that this guitar sounds great and is fun to play! The old Gibson are lightweight and really vibrate and resonate when you play them. The tone is pretty balanced with lots of high and lower end. I always like to have an old guitar around like this to play in the house and look at because they are so cool!
