1959 Gibson J-160E Vintage
Acoustic/Electric Guitar
Serial # S191329
Gibson first introduced the J-160E in 1954,
it being their second attempt at a flat top acoustic/electric guitar. The model gained popularity during the early
1960’s when George Harrison and John Lennon of The Beatles made it their
standard acoustic guitar.
The 1959 model features a laminate spruce
top and ladder bracing that cuts down on feedback, but does give it less
sustain and a flatter acoustical tone than solid wood construction. The fret board is constructed of rosewood and
consists of trapezoid inlays, while the head stock features a crown inlay.
This guitar has been passed down through my family, and I wasn't quite sure of the year it was manufactured, so I contacted Gibson Customer Service and sent them some pictures with the serial number; that is how I found out it was a 1959 model. If you would like to also inquire, the customer service contact is: 1-800-4GIBSON or service@gibson.com
This particular guitar has all original
parts except for the tuning gears, which were upgraded during the 1960’s by the
original owner. Gibson does offer
replica J-160E vintage tuning gears, if you want to go back to the original
style.
While the guitar still sounds and plays
great, there are some issues. The
bracing below the bridge is starting to “belly” or bulge a little, a guitar
technician recommended using lighter strings during play and loosening strings
when guitar is not going to be played for a while. The finish is flaking along the bottom of the
body, and there are a few repairable cracks on the back of the body. There is also some wear around the headstock,
and a few scratches on the bottom and sides of the body. Original single coil pick-up is still in place, however, when plugged in the amplification is somewhat muffled, probably due to a ground issue. Fret board, neck, and frets are in excellent
condition.
This is an ideal guitar for vintage
collectors.
