Excellent condition with original plush case plus Gibson brochure and soundhole humidifier. Original owner. Purchased in 1998 from an independent Gibson dealer. Spruce top and mahogany sides. Gibson produced only 50 to 75 of the Formula 1L acoustic guitars in the Bozeman, Montana factory. The guitar is essentially a J-30 style built as a prototype to test various finishes and woods, according to background information from Gibson. Notable details include the vintage-style Gibson script logo inlaid into the headstock and the gold tuners. Guitar plays well and sounds exactly like a Gibson J-30 or J-45.
The following information comes from a Gibson representative posted on a Gibson discussion forum:
> The Formula 1L and Formula 1S were two models we introduced late in 1996. They were in a sense 'prototypes' only to see how the public would take to a satin finish on the guitar. The 1L is a J-30 and the 1S is a J-45, both with a reverse belly bridge and different tuners than the normal J-30 and J-45. I'm not positive, but I believed only 50-75 of each model was produced. That was the only time that we did the formula models.
