Up for sale is an almost new john greven handmade nick lucas rendition. The label reads “l-00v custom”, indicating it is a vintage series guitar, but it is his nick lucas guitar with less fancy fretboard inlay and honduran mahogany back and sides. It is the same shape as an l-00, just like the old gibson 30’s nick lucas, but it has a deeper body depth, like the old gibson nick lucas. Here’s the specs:
Top: lutz spruce w/ (your choice) sitka brace
Back, sides and neck: honduran mahogany
Fretboard: ebony (bound fretboard)
bridge: black rosewood
Glue: hide glue on wood to wood joints.
Number of frets to body: 13
Headstock: solid
Neck shape: vintage gibson style "v". my kg-11, which i love, has a 1 2/32" depth at the nut and a 1" depth at the third fret.
Inlay: gibson style dots at 3,5,7,9,12 (double) 15. “the greven” with fleur de’ lis (pearl) on headstock..
Ornamentation: as nick lucas without the fancy fingerboard inlay.
Soundhole: bound, dimensions as nick lucas
Binding: ivoroid
Finish: french polish as discussed. Vintage natural with dark stained mahogoney back, sides and neck.
Scale length: 25 1/4"
Nut width: 1 25/32”
String spacing at bridge saddle: 2 5/16”
Frets: #0147 .080 height .040 width
Action: optimally, a hair below 7/64 on the sixth string; between 5/64and 6/64 at the first string (measured at the twelth fret).
Nut and saddle material: “vintage” (unbleached) bone.
Pickguard: (unattatched) tiger stripe with cream underliner
Tuners: nickel waverly’s with nickle butterbean knobs.
Bridge pins: waverly ivoroid
Strings: d’adarrio phosphor bronze medium (0.13-.056)
This guitar might be the best sounding l-00 size guitar I’ve ever played. John is a master at bracing the tops on these and this guitar is loud and rich and full and has that old gibson pre-war sound. The lutz spruce sounds like adirondack and has all the headroom too. The neck is a comfortable “v”, not too big and the frets are vintage size. There is plenty of saddle and the intonation is dead on with .013 or .012 gauge strings. There are a few scratches near where the pickguard would go. The finish work is not 100%perfect, and the ultra-thin french polish on top is delicate, but it is worth seeing s few scratches for the way this baby sounds. it is a beautiful guitar. The woodwork, binding work, neck shape and all hide glue work is at a very high standard. The body and sides are french polish sealed with a thin coat of lacquer. The pickguard is included but not attached, and I positioned it on the top for a couple of photos. There’s a K&K mini pickup system installed (this is the most natural system I have heard) and I will include the premium K&K “pure xlr” preamp. Complete with a very practical form fitted travalite case. His nick lucas, with the fancy inlay on the fretboard, sells for 4500 and there is a 12 month wait…….
