A BEAUTIFUL, AND VERY TONEFUL …
1973 GIBSON J-45 DELUXE
WITH CHERRY SUNBURST FINISH
Please call us direct at 615-613-1389 for in-hand description
There's no doubt Gibson built a heaping load of J-45s during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and that's why they earned their rightful nickname "The Workingman's Guitar". But they are also considered some of the finest sounding acoustics in the world, and are still to this day used on more recordings than just about any other acoustic guitar (just ask anyone in Nashville with a recording studio what they're most used guitar is and they'll probably answer "an old J-45"). Here is one such example of one of the "really good" Gibson J-45s from the early 1970s. We believe this one hails from 1973, specifically based on its dreadnaught square shoulders (they switched back to round shoulders in 1974) and its early A004662 serial number.
We've had our share of J-45s this year, and most of them have been fairly good sounding. This one, however, produces a wonderfully great tone ... very balanced, with excellent projection and sustain. And we find this almost incredible to believe because this one was marked "2" on the back on the headstock, underneath the "MADE IN USA" stamp. It's quite obvious it was marked a "2" - or "second" - because of several flaws in the finish, which are clearly visible in the pictures, and which are explained in detail in the next paragraph. But it wasn't marked a "2" because of anything dealing with its tone or playability, because this J-45 is truly one of the best sounding and playing J-45s we've EVER offered! And we're not just saying it ... this thing has sustain for days! Strum it once and it seemingly rings forever, and with near-perfect harmonic balance all the way through each chord. It truly produces a spectacular sound, and can adapt to any playing environment ... whether it's a studio (perfect) or the stage.
The reason it was marked a "2", however, are the obvious finish flaws. Gibson has always been known for its notoriously thin layers of lacquer. On the one hand, it's one of the main reasons a Gibson guitar sounds so good. But the other side of the argument is that thin layers of lacquer can eventually start to chip, and leave much to be desired for guitars with such a great reputation. The finish on this one is especially thin, and shows signs of cracking mostly along the tortoiseshell binding on both the top and back, and on several very minor areas on the top and back, and where the neck meets the body. All of the areas can be clearly seen in the pictures above. These finish flaws, however, do not affect the tone or playability of this wonderful guitar in any way. They also don't affect the beautiful, somewhat faded Cherry Sunburst finish on the top ... which REALLY stands out in direct sunlight or under the stage lights. Look at the pictures and judge for yourself.
The neck on this J-45 is near perfect, as are the rosewood fingerboard and frets. It needs absolutely nothing ... no set-up (unless you don't like low action), and no bridge adjustment. Everything on the guitar is completely 100% original, and there is no evidence of any breaks or repairs of any kind. Overall, we would grade this wonderful acoustic in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition simply because of the flaws in the finish. But if we were grading it for its tone and playability we would have to give it pretty high marks, because this one is a true cannon. It really needs to be heard and played to be truly appreciated. If you like tone and playability over looks, then this is your guitar.
It is also accompanied by a non-original hardshell case.
These 1970s Gibson J-45s are some of the most undervalued Gibsons on the market today, and all of the ones we've offered for sale this year have sold in a very short time. There's a reason they don't last long, and we expect this one will be no different.
