Gibson has definitely made its share of infamous guitars since it started making them in the late 1800s, and some of them have achieved their iconic status with collectors due to their overall scarcity, their fabulous playability, and - of course - their association and popularity with some of the biggest names in music history.

One such guitar is the Gibson J-160E flat top, which achieved its notoriety and popularity in the early 1960s when The Beatles' George Harrison and John Lennon made the model their acoustic of choice until about 1968. Additionally, the Gibson J-160E helped pave the way for many of Gibson's newer models of today. Because of all this, the J-160E remains one of Gibson's most collectible acoustic guitars.

This particular example is either from 1970 or 1971 - Gibson changed the tear-drop pickguard of this model to a three-point pickguard in 1972, and the square-shouldered model made its debut in 1969. However, the neck volute and "MADE IN USE" stamp on the back of the headstock did not appear on Gibson guitars until 1970, and the serial number therefore dates it to either a 1970 or 1971 model.

This J-160E features Gibson's iconic Cherry Sunburst finish, and overall is in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. It features a Spruce top with Mahogany back and sides. The neck is also made of Mahogay and topped with a bound Rosewood fingerboard with Mother of Pearl trapezoid inlays. The bridge is also made of Rosewood, and the original white bridge pins have been replaced with brass bridge pins, which substantially increase the overall resonance of this acoustic.

The single coil pickup and volume and tone control work flawlessly, and sound pretty incredible considering their age and simplicity. Played over a well-adjusted amplifier or sound system, this J-160E will stand proudly with any of today's best acoustics for overall tone and playability.

At some point in its life, this J-160E suffered a small hairline crack along the upper part of the lower bout, very close to the edge of the guitar. You can see it clearly in one of the pictures below. It was stabilized and repaired by Nashville's finest luthier, Joe Glaser of Glaser Instruments. If you don’t know who Joe is, Google his name and you’ll see
that not only is he the finest luthier in Nashville, but he's widely considered to be one of the
best luthiers in the entire world. Joe is the luthier of choice for guitar legends
such as Vince Gill, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Eric Clapton, and many, many
others. If you wish, you can call us at 615-613-1389 and we would be happy to pass
along his contact information so you can talk to him directly about this
J-160E.

The frets definitely have some life left, but the guitar will eventually need new frets at some point. There is lacquer checking throughout the top, back and sides, and the bridge is showing slight signs of lifting but is completely stable and in no danger of coming off the guitar any time soon. This is definitely a "player's guitar", and most great acoustics are "player's guitars" because they sound and play very good. And this J-160E is undoubtedly one of the good ones. You will not be disappointed in the overall quality and playability of this great and historic Gibson acoustic.

The guitar comes with the original Gibson hardshell case.
