Purchased this Gibson J-50 in 1960 ( I was 15) at Forbes Piano & Music Company in Anniston, Alabama.  Paid for the guitar with monies earned from playing gigs at various venues including the army base located at Fort McClellan in Anniston.

Had the opportunity to be the lead singer for a variety of music groups, including rock n' roll bands, country/western bands and southern gospel groups.  This guitar was my go-to instrument.  The sound is truly a Gibson sound.  Its tones are mellow, sweet and toasty.

In 2004, it was appraised for $3,000+.  Slope shouldered body, spruce top round soundhole, tortoise shell pickguard, three-stripe bound body and rosette, mahogany back/neck/sides; 14/20-fret fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, rosewood bridge with cream pins/black dots, three-per-side nickel tuners with pearl buttons, natural finish.

There are a few minor blemishes that only add character to the beautiful patina. Around the sound hole there are a few signs of wear--I picked and played it a lot.  On the back, there are a few scratches, probably from my western belt buckle.

Hard shell Tweed case included.  Local pick up only--Could not stand the thoughts of shipping.

I am not a strong history buff on Gibsons, but I have been able to determine a little bit of the production information:

The serial number from the inside of the body is R 2740 6.  The matrix/legend for the serial number is:  R = 1960 Model; 2740 = Order number; 6 = Number 6 in a total of 40 lot production.
